CASALS HALL VIOLA SPACE is a project which is focusing and glorifying viola music, and viola as an instrument, hosted at Casals Hall in Japan , a specialized hall for chamber music named after Pablo Casals. The project was started in 1992 by 3 major Japanese viola players ; Nobuko Imai, Masako Kawasaki and Mazumi Tanamura. Thanks to all of you we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of "Viola Space" this year. In this project, we have been introducing many wonderful viola music pieces in the world including some world premiers, with many fine violists. Especially, in 1995 we have commemorated the 100th anniversary for the birth of Paul Hindemith and organized International Hindemith Viola Festival (as Viola Space 1995) at Tokyo Casals Hall, London Wigmore Hall and NY Miller Theatre in Columbia University, which was lead to a great success. One of the important elements of the Viola Space is to nurture young violists. In order to do so, we have Open Master Classes for young players. At the same time, in order to give them a chance to perform in front of a public audience we organize a pre-concert prior to the regular concert. We are very pleased to say that among those activities we have already witnessed some prominent young artists have gone on to the world leading stages. Now we are preparing to organize the 10th Viola Space as a Viola Festival gathering those who came to perform for the Viola Space in the past, rising spirited violists and young prominent violists for future. We are more than happy if you could celebrate this Festival with us in the very opening year of the twenty-first century.
